A Antropologia do Ritual - O Socialismo como Religião
The Anthropology of Ritual - Socialism as Religion
Vejamos o primeiro pilar: a narrativa.
A objeção imediata do leitor ingênuo seria equiparar isto à propaganda política.
Acordar significa recuperar a distância crítica.
Deixar sangrar. Recusar a sutura fácil.

The Anthropology of Ritual - Socialism as Religion
A man reads an official document — just guidelines, words about the historical process, the collective effort, the need to correct deviations. The faces around him are rigid and their eyes fixed. We have spent centuries priding ourselves on having demolished the old altars. But it is enough to look at those men and women to understand that we have not killed the rituals. We merely tore the gods from the sky and transferred the liturgy.
The mention of the word "ritual" in public debate is enough to trigger two reactions that, although ostensibly opposed, are perfectly identical in the ignorance that sustains them. On one side, we have the materialist's contempt. On the other, we are faced with the superstitious, in a fantasy where any collective gesture hides portals to hidden dimensions. Both share a precept: the belief that ritual is an archaic residue of the species, an antiquity that modernity should have swept into the museum. Both are dead wrong. Man judges that he is primarily a rational animal who, in his spare time, distracts himself with symbolisms. As it happens, there is no possible human experience where the symbolic dimension operates as an appendix of reason. Rationality itself, even before it can calculate the material world, arises as the logical articulation of a symbolic horizon that precedes, conditions, and grounds it.
Think with me: man needs rituals because imagination is the exact organ through which reality becomes perceptible. Remove the symbolic mediation and what is left is not "objective reality", but chaos; there is only the bombardment of neurological stimuli.
The first clarification imposes itself: ritual is the method par excellence of educating the imagination. It is a millennial technique of inner orthopedics, designed to mold the perception of the real in such a way that the world becomes existentially meaningful, charged with a sense that guides human action concretely. Every worthwhile ritual operates an existential reordering in the subject's mind: the initiate leaves the ceremony endowed with a new structure of vision. This is where the modern brain stalls. Addicted to confusing knowledge with information, man cannot conceive of a pedagogy that instills dispositions. Whoever undergoes an initiation becomes another subject, operating under a new hierarchy of values and endowed with a superior sensitivity to distinguish what matters from what is garbage.
Science has nothing to oppose to this. The physicist and the mystic do not cancel each other out, for they inhabit and operate in distinct registers of apprehending reality. The domain of the scientific method is incontestable in its proper sphere. The misfortune begins only when a specific ritualistic structure dons the lab coat of science and demands that its particular cosmology be swallowed as the only legitimate description of the universe. Concrete human experience, the dramatic way the individual inhabits his own life, is mediated by structures of meaning that function as rituals, whether the subject is aware of it or not.
If the ritual dimension is an imposition of the human structure, modernity never extirpated the symbolic; it merely concealed it and changed its address. Dogmas left the churches for the State, altars were replaced by party platforms, and sacraments transmuted into ideological imperatives. The supreme form of this fraudulent transfer is found in so-called scientific socialism. This reaches the apex of liturgical sophistication not by rivaling the open State worship present in other totalitarianisms, but through its unprecedented capacity for dissimulation: it is the only system of faith that establishes its absolute under the strict cloak of rational necessity and historical determinism. Its efficacy lies in camouflage, operating as the most dangerous political religion precisely because it swears, in the name of scientific rigor, to have nothing religious about it.
The haughty contempt that the secular intellectual feels for traditional rituals is, in a supreme irony, the death certificate of his own independence, for this contempt is the final product of the invisible ritual in which he himself was initiated. The most dangerous modern rituals have their architecture designed to produce absolute blindness about themselves.
I admit that here my literary voice becomes uncertain, crossing the methodological border between anthropological theory and the raw flesh of modern political history. But it is the inevitable step. There is a historical irony that escapes most sociologists, most likely because their own academic training makes them blind to the phenomenon. No modern power structure has ever needed a ritualistic mechanics as much as socialism, and this occurred because it was the only system that denied, with theological furor, possessing any liturgical dimension. The traditions that openly recognized themselves as sacred could afford sobriety: the medieval peasant did not need daily militant marches to sustain his faith, for his cosmos was already ordered by an incontestable transcendence. Socialism, by setting itself up as the pure and definitive "science of history", and by assassinating the transcendent God, found itself facing a vacuum. To fill this void and monopolize human action, it was forced to invent an entirely earthly substitute. And, like every substitute that tries to emulate the absolute in the sphere of immanence, it had to be infinitely more concentrated, more invasive, and more paranoid.
Understanding this phenomenon requires that we immediately abandon the idea that we are using a religious "metaphor" to describe a political movement. There is no metaphor here. We are facing an engineering. Every initiation ritual that effectively reconfigures human perception rests on three pillars: narrative, belonging, and transformation. Without them, there is no substantial alteration of consciousness; there is no integral adhesion of the subject; there is no existential obedience. What distinguishes the architecture of socialism is the feat of hiding the pillars. It is a colossal edifice designed so that its inhabitants swear, up and down, that there are no walls.
Let us look at the first pillar: narrative. The initiate is swallowed into a historical-salvationist scheme that rewrites the very structure of time. The plot is of an archetypal schematism as old as Gnosticism: it postulates a state of original purity (primitive communism), a catastrophic fall that introduces evil into the world (the invention of private property and the division of labor), a long valley of tears (the entire history of class societies), and, finally, the promise of an eschatological redemption (the classless society). In the theoretical script, the proletariat is cast in the role of collective messiah, but the cunning of this theology is revealed in the next step: since real workers are judged incapable of achieving the proper "revolutionary consciousness" on their own, the messianic role is immediately usurped by the Party. It is this vanguard, ironically, an elite of bourgeois intellectuals, that proclaims itself the living incarnation of the people's will and the infallible clergy of History. The revolution thus becomes the secularized last judgment, administered by bureaucrats. Karl Marx labeled this theological fraud as science; but intelligence knows that science does not deal with self-appointed elites to save humanity. Who deals with that is myth. And the socialist myth is relentless because it convinces the subject that he is not an individual with his own destiny, but a cog whose acts only make sense if they accelerate the inevitable march of this cosmic narrative.
The second pillar, belonging, reveals a mutation. In classical spiritual traditions, the ritualistic community serves to elevate the individual above himself; the liturgy (literally, "the work of the people") converges towards a transcendent point that preserves the dignity of the human person while integrating him into a higher whole. Socialism inverts this polarity. The neophyte is not called to ascend to a higher community, but to "become aware of his objective position" in the productive structure. The subject is persuaded that his individuality, with its private anguishes and moral intuitions, is merely a bourgeois illusion. Socialist belonging debases and dissolves. The individual is invited to abdicate his inner form to merge into the mass, becoming — to use René Guénon's warning, I believe in The Reign of Quantity, if memory does not fail me now on the details — a slave to the outer form that molds him. There is only functional fusion. Herd meat.
The pillar of transformation consolidates the capture. The supreme efficacy of this ritual lies in the amnesia it induces. The Christian knows exactly the day he was baptized; the Jew understands the weight of his Bar Mitzvah. They recognize the alteration of their spiritual state. The socialist, on the contrary, experiences his initiation as a sudden "awakening" to objective reality. He looks back and does not see that he adopted a new belief; he thinks he simply stopped being an idiot.
This clinical inability to perceive one's own transformation is the definitive proof of the ritual's success. The subject is so deeply immersed in the new symbolic architecture that he confuses the contact lenses of ideology with his own corneas.
Such an unnatural structure demands the sacrifice of individuality and the denial of transcendence. It does not sustain itself in the air, it needs a transmission mechanism, operating even before any external political action. And the gateway to this prison is built with the saliva of words.
If the socialist ritual operates under the veil of invisibility, its gateway into the human psyche cannot be opened by gestural acts and public ceremonies. A militant march and an exuberant rally would be recognized too early as liturgical stagings. The initiation, the one that precedes and conditions action, occurs in language as a catechism of existential reconfiguration. Before the individual learns to act in the world, he needs to be taught to see it in a drastically amputated way.
The immediate objection of the naive reader would be to equate this with political propaganda. Propaganda scratches only the surface of ideas, whereas the linguistic initiation of socialism destroys the preexisting subject to install, in his place, a conceptual automaton. Let us consider the mechanics of its fundamental terms. An expression like "class struggle" is a magic word, a performative rite. Where the uninitiated individual sees the astonishing complexity of human relations, conflicts of interest, personal virtues and vices, unpredictable tragedies, the neophyte begins to see, instantaneously and obligatorily, the same binary and asphyxiating structure of oppressors and oppressed. The term functions as an absolutist hermeneutic key that rewrites the entirety of the real to make it fit into the salvationist myth of revolution. By pronouncing the authorized vocabulary, the militant decrees the strict horizon of what he is permitted to see and what must remain invisible.
This process is repeated in every syntagm of the primer. Expressions like "structural oppression", "revolutionary consciousness", and "historical contradiction" contain within themselves a complete micro-ritual. Even if disguised as a tool of macrosociological analysis, the category of structural oppression operates, in practice, an ethical transmutation: it dissolves the moral boundary between the voluntary agency of the individual and the class to which he was fatally assigned, replacing personal responsibility with a guilt of birth. In the same vein, the dogma of historical contradiction annihilates the difference between the contingent event and necessity, converting chance and human tragedy into the cogs of an absolute tribunal. The cumulative effect of this vocabulary sprinkling is perfect intellectual claustrophobia: the construction of a mirrored universe where everything is explained by the same premise, everything converges to the same end, and where the subject can no longer even conceive the hypothesis of a world outside this glass dome.
In classical initiations, admission to the rites required the neophyte to recognize that visible and material reality did not exhaust the real; there were deeper, transcendent planes of meaning that demanded an elevation of one's gaze. In socialism, the formal requirement is identical, but its material content is the exact opposite. The adept must accept that reality is not what his direct experience attests, but only what ideological theory decrees it should be. There is no unfathomable mystery to be contemplated, but a brute immanence to be corrected; the world, under this lens, becomes infinitely coarser, reducible to a handful of materialistic schemas.
This is the true rite of passage, consummated in the visceral acceptance of a dogma: the idea that you are not an individual soul, but an organic byproduct of a "structure". From the moment this dogma settles in the imagination, the entire biography of the subject loses its legitimacy. His pains, intuitions, moral achievements, and sins are demoted to the pathetic category of "false consciousness". Personal responsibility, the axis of human dignity, is replaced by the blind causality of historical forces. The individual is psychologically reformatted, emptied of his inner substance, to fit into the costume of a collective function.
This is the tragic asymmetry that defines this debasement: in authentic mystical traditions, the initiate emerges from the ordeal ennobled, with a subjectivity enriched by the perception of mystery. In the socialist dismantling ritual, the initiate emerges reduced to a fraction of himself. His vision was simplified, his inner complexity was dissolved, and the supreme perversity of the technique lies in this: he experiences the amputation of his own soul as if it were the apex of intellectual enlightenment.
The inevitable objection, the one the materialist reader has by now formulated in his mind with a smile of anticipated triumph: "How can socialism be a religion and operate rituals if its foundational premise is militant atheism and the visceral refusal of any supernatural order?". The belief that the suppression of the supernatural eliminates the religious structure of the human psyche is the most successful fraud of modern political vocabulary. Marxist atheism does not result in a true vacuum of faith. Regardless of the strictly materialist intentions of its founders, the methodical eradication of transcendence operates, in the psychic and social economy of the masses, merely as a clearing of the ground: the sacred space, suddenly emptied and unable to bear its own emptiness, attracts by an implacable gravitational pull a new kind of divinity, purely immanent and infinitely more voracious, to occupy the throne.
To philosophically understand the mechanics of this usurpation, the religious dimension of man is defined by his relation to the Absolute, the ultimate horizon of meaning that answers to nothing, the primary source of authority to which all underlying existence is subordinated. In the classical and Judeo-Christian tradition, this Absolute is strictly transcendent. God is outside the world. This separation has a liberating political consequence, usually ignored by short-sighted secularists: if the Absolute is outside the world, no worldly power, be it the king or the State, can claim absolute authority over the human being. The supreme tribunal does not inhabit the Earth. Transcendence is the insurmountable limit of tyranny, the breathing space where individual conscience, armed with its inner freedom, can appeal against the injustice of the century.
What "scientific socialism" does, under the Enlightenment pretext of freeing man from superstition, is completely abolish this breathing space. It does not eliminate the human need for an Absolute; it immanentizes the Absolute. It drags the divinity into the material flow of time and re-baptizes it with profane and majestic names: History, the Class, the Party. And it is exactly here that the ritual reaches its insuperable totalitarian voltage.
When the Absolute is transcendent, liturgy is an act of adoration to a mystery that the faithful do not control, keeping their soul open to the infinite. When the Absolute is immanent, adoration is demoted to obedience to a political machine that proclaims itself the very incarnation of that absolute. "History", in Marxist jargon, is a teleological entity with a will of its own, an implacable and unquestionable goddess that demands real human sacrifices. The Party is the infallible clergy, the vanguard bearing the revelation, which holds the monopoly on interpreting the designs of this earthly divinity.
In this scenario of asphyxiation, the theological objection dissolves completely. Socialism lacks gods in heaven precisely because it divinized political matter on Earth. And it is necessary to recognize: an immanent god is infinitely more tyrannical. To a transcendent God, the individual can ask for forgiveness, for His justice is unfathomable and mediated by mercy. But one cannot ask forgiveness of the "March of History" or the "Class Struggle". Immanent entities do not forgive; they crush. The heretic of the socialist ritual, rechristened a "fascist", is classified as an anomaly, a mechanical obstacle to the advent of earthly paradise. And, like an error in the cogs of the material universe, must be purged.
The invisible ritual thus consummates its architecture. By convincing the individual that he is operating in a purely secular, emancipated, and rational manner, the structure demands a spiritual submission that would make the most hardened inquisitors of the Middle Ages hesitate. The militant sacrifices his personal morality, his affections, his scruples, and his very sensory perception of reality in the name of a promise to an immediate political abstraction that crushes him.
When the ritual fails in its maximal pretense to internally reconfigure consciousness, ideology is forced to cast away the mask of historical consensus — and does so with that rasping sound of dirty adhesive tape being dry-ripped from the skin — to resort to the pedagogy of physical crushing. Explicit violence is the confession that the engineering collided with a fissure in human nature that the mold could not obliterate.
The absolute triumph of socialism, its architectural masterpiece, is the perfect prison, the one that dispenses with jailers because the bars were installed in the prisoner's own retinas. The self-policing individual, who confuses the limits of his ideological cell with the natural horizon of the universe, represents the apex of the efficiency of this debasement.
Time and History become an already solved equation, hermetic and teleological. The "event", the event in its strongest philosophical sense, that which bursts into normality breaking the continuum and demanding of the subject an authentic and risky existential decision, is summarily abolished. Everything that happens in the real world is already previously interpreted, labeled, and integrated into the narrative of structural oppression even before being experienced. His consciousness merely stamps the facts with the Party's seals.
It is in this morbid pretension of totality that the system's vulnerability lies. No ritual of immanence can compress the structure of reality indefinitely. Reality eventually overflows the tight margins of the ideological scheme. It is in this shock, facing the real pain that does not fit into the class jargon, that the soul has the opportunity to wake up.
To wake up means recovering critical distance. It means restoring the capacity to perceive that between the material world and our intellectual interpretation of it, there is an irreducible space of mystery.
The acceptance of what we might call the constitutive wound. The human condition is marked by a fracture between our thirst for the absolute and our contingent misery. The socialist ritual extracts its power of magnetic seduction precisely because it promises to heal this wound through politics. It promises the construction of a definitive society where, finally, reality will coincide with the idea, and the individual will merge in total harmony with the collective.
This promise is a spiritual mutilation. Liberation... liberation, if that word still bears any real weight in our time without crumbling, lies in the naked courage, in the inarticulate stubbornness to stoically endure the open wound. To let it bleed. To refuse the easy suture. For it is exactly this permanent cleft in our understanding of the real, this uncomfortable and painful inadequacy that the socialist tries to anesthetize with ideology, that makes us genuinely free. To sustain the constitutive wound is the price we pay not to be reduced to automatons. It is what keeps our intellect humble, our intelligence awake, and our soul eternally open to the unforeseen, to transcendence, and to the greatness of the human mystery.
Dialectical Appendix
The present essay, by descending into the foundations of modern political liturgy and exposing its engineering of human debasement, inevitably attracts the scrutiny of specialized academia. To honor the classical dialectical tradition, the author refuses the defensive position. Instead, this thesis invites critical formulations to the center of the analytical arena.
The first structural objection that an erudite investigator would oppose to this work rests on the thesis of historical pluralism and methodological neutrality. The critic will formulate that the present essay incurs in analytical monolithism by treating the socialist tradition as a cohesive block of engineering. The objection postulates that Marxist theory, in its organic genesis, is strictly a method of socioeconomic and descriptive scrutiny, devoid of ritualistic drives. The totalitarian liturgical dimension would be a historical deviation, an accident forged by specific implementations, and not the substance of the original model, which aimed only at material emancipation.
But any system of thought that postulates the totality of human phenomena as a byproduct of a single mechanical cog and that subordinates the existential valuation of the present to the inflexible attainment of a final stage of absolute harmony, demanding the moral sacrifice of the subject in the name of this immanent teleology, ceases to be a scientific descriptive to operate under the mechanics of an eschatological religion. The classical materialist matrix, by erecting class struggle as the omnipresent motor of reality and the advent of the classless society as the guaranteed redemption of history, exactingly instates this devouring teleology. It concludes that the ritualistic and salvationist nature of the system is not an authoritarian appendix grafted on a posteriori, but the major premise that sustains and conditions the edifice, reducing the touted historical pluralism to an exchange of janitors within the same prison.
The second critical assault focuses on the nature of secularism, challenging the premise of the spiritual vacuum filled by ideology. The skeptical evaluator will propose that the assertion that the suppression of the transcendent Absolute necessarily attracts a new type of divinity rests on a dogmatic anthropology. In its strongest formulation, the objection argues that a pure secular worldview is perfectly feasible; militant atheism does not operate a transfer of the sacred to the State, but achieves the true abolition of the category of the absolute. Under this sociological lens, the political world would merely be a secular space of power negotiation, operating self-sufficiently and without harboring any secret liturgy or earthly gods.
This construction collapses under its own weight when colliding with the inversion of cause and effect inherent in revolutionary praxis. The motor of any collective movement capable of demanding existential submission and the summary sacrifice of individuality requires, by structural necessity, anchoring in a definitive and unquestionable source of authority. The historical praxis of the movement in question does not operate a tactical subordination of private morality, but demands its integral replacement, since the subsistence of any internal forum of judgment would constitute an unacceptable fissure in the absolute jurisdiction of the impersonal teleological machinery. It follows that the neutrality of the secular vacuum is a mechanical impossibility in the human fabric; the degree of absolute sacrifice demanded of the subject proves that the altar was not destroyed, but transplanted into political immanence, demonstrating that entities like "History" and the "Party" occupy exactly the gravitational lacuna previously reserved for transcendence.
The third and most penetrating objection assaults the very defense of human irreducibility presented by the author. The critic will point out that the text operates upon a nominalist fallacy or a pre-modern essentialism, assuming the existence of a pre-existing and autonomous "soul". Supported by linguistics and cutting-edge cognitive science, the counter-argument would postulate that human subjectivity is entirely constructed by the networks of productive relations and discourses of its time. Thus, the so-called "socialist ritual" would not be amputating or debasing a sovereign individuality, for this never existed objectively; the process would merely be unmasking the bourgeois illusion of the independent "I", scientifically realigning the subject's consciousness with the matter that actually forged him.
The fracture of this premise is revealed in a contradiction: the existential act of diagnosing one's own alienation, morally condemning the flaws of the material structure in which one lives, and deciding to operate in the world to alter it cannot be confused with a mechanical feedback loop; it requires that the conscious entity operate from an evaluative tribunal that transcends that same structure. If human subjectivity were a passive and absolute byproduct of the material coordinates of its epoch, as determinist theory dictates, the very critical distancing necessary to observe these forces from the outside and rebel against them would be a violation of the laws of its own sociological physics. The imposition for the individual to "awaken" and judge his historical condition proves, despite his detractors, the existence of an antecedent and transcendent interiority, capable of evaluating matter from a tribunal that matter cannot explain.
The fourth and most sophisticated attack will denounce a supposed reflective blind spot in the essay's own methodology. The astute critic will point out that the very same analytical ruler — the unavoidable triad of eschatological narrative, community belonging, and identity transformation — used to unmask the totalitarian mechanism of socialism, rigorously structures the classical religious tradition itself underlying the author's worldview. The objection will postulate that the text incurs in an arbitrary double standard: it exempts its own heritage from structural scrutiny, labeling spiritual liturgy as "inner orthopedics" while condemning secular liturgy as "amputation", avoiding the demonstration of the difference that would justify the repulsion of one and the validation of the other.
The structural ruin of this last objection lies in the confusion between the formal tool of ritual and the vector of submission, ignoring the asymmetry between transcendence and immanence. In classical liturgy, narrative and belonging converge towards an unfathomable Mystery that rests strictly outside the material world, preserving the dignity of the human person while integrating him into a higher whole. This separation (the Absolute outside the world) acts as the guarantee of individual freedom: by submitting to the unattainable, the subject preserves a breathing space immune to any earthly tyranny. The inevitable reply of the historian critic, who will brandish the purges of the Inquisition or the religious wars as proof that transcendence also produces crushing, does not falsify the premise; it merely attests to its collapse. When ecclesiastical authority usurps the divine tribunal and confuses itself with the very Absolute it should serve, it degenerates into a pseudo-immanentism; it abandons transcendence to convert itself into a worldly idol.
In contrast, the socialist ritual gathers the Absolute from the heavens and furiously compresses it into the brute immanence of the historical flux from its original blueprint, rechristening it with profane names. When the divinity is dragged into physical time, adoration is demoted to strict obedience to a political machine that proclaims itself the incarnation of that absolute. The distinction does not operate in the moral field, but in geometric mechanics: the ritual directed towards the transcendent keeps the soul open to the infinite, while the ritual confined to immanence demands real human sacrifices, crushing the heretic as an error in the material machinery that must be purged.
It is fitting here to anticipate the final and most cunning reply of the critic: that this same recourse, the distinction between the essence of a system and its historical degeneration, could equally be invoked in defense of socialism, absolving the purges of the gulags as mere bureaucratic deviations from a doctrine whose substance would remain innocent. This symmetry is only apparent, for it dissolves as soon as one examines what each degeneration betrays. The ecclesiastical authority that proclaims itself the Absolute ruptures the constitutive definition of transcendence, which requires, by logical necessity, that the Mystery remain unattainable and irreducible to any earthly possession; the abuse is a betrayal of the system's structure, not its execution.
But this distinction, in order not to remain an assertion of authority, demands that the mechanism that sustains it be made explicit. Consider what it means, strictly speaking, to immanentize the Absolute: it is not merely to bring into the world an object of veneration previously situated outside it; it is to eliminate any instance of judgment that remains exterior to that object. A transcendent Absolute, precisely by dwelling outside the historical flux, necessarily leaves open a space in which individual conscience can appeal against the earthly order in the name of something that no worldly institution exhausts, and it is this space that ecclesiastical authority, by usurping it, betrays. An immanent Absolute, by contrast, does not have this exteriority to preserve, for its very definition consists in coinciding with the historical flux and not with something that precedes or exceeds it. It follows from this, without needing to resort to any empirical data, that any forum of conscience that reserves the right to judge "History" or the "Party" from a criterion that these do not provide is, ipso facto, establishing a second source of authority, and a system that has defined itself as the Absolute cannot tolerate a competing authority without denying the very premise that constitutes it. Integral submission is not an excess of zeal by the doctrine's administrators; it is the logical condition of coherence for any immanentism that takes itself seriously.
A precision is recorded that dialectical honesty demands: what has been demonstrated up to this point is a conceptual necessity, given the immanentist system in its pure form, total submission is what its structure claims in order to remain coherent with itself. This is not equivalent to demonstrating that every historical instance of socialism must, by fatality, result in terror; it is equivalent to demonstrating that to the extent a historical instance departs from this outcome, it does so to the exact extent that it tolerates, in practice, an exteriority that its own doctrine does not grant it in theory, that is, to the extent it lives off an internal inconsistency that prevents it from being the full immanentism it professes. Terror is the destiny of immanence when it is taken, without concessions, to its ultimate logical consequences, and the distance separating a concrete socialist regime from that destiny is measured precisely by the degree to which it preserves, against its own doctrine, some unconfessed crack of transcendence.
It remains to be seen, facing the opaque mirror of our own era, whether we still have living eyes to recognize this crack before the wall of bricks and words closes for good. Or whether we are already, ourselves, sitting on the inside.
