A Colonização do Imaginário - Do Hiper-real ao Hipocognitivo

The Colonization of the Imaginary - From Hyperreal to Hypocognitive

A chuva batia pesada no telhado, e o ar cheirava a poeira úmida e cera queimada.

O ambiente midiático exterminou a capacidade simbólica, instaurando a ditadura absoluta do signo.

Vazio.

E a acedia...

A cegueira é defensiva.

The Colonization of the Imaginary - From the Hyper-real to the Hypocognitive

An old monarch, exhausted by the unpredictability of the seasons and the imperfection of living things, decided to build for himself a definitive garden. He summoned the best artisans in the kingdom and ordered them to reproduce every flower, every tree, and every bird using polished glass, extremely thin blades of silver, and shining stones. High above, he installed a system of mirrors and lamps designed so that the environment would never grow dark and there would be no shadows.

It was a spectacle of perfection. The monarch, fascinated by his own creation, ordered the heavy iron gates locked and decided to live exclusively there, bathed in that uninterrupted clarity. But something terrible happened to him as the months passed. Without the contrast of the night, without the smell of damp earth, without noticing the imperfection of a real leaf, he lost first the capacity to be enchanted, then the will to walk, and, finally, his very appetite.

When the guards finally broke down the doors, some time later, they found the man wasting away on the marble steps. He had suffered no violence, no physical deprivation. He died simply because, in an environment where the artificial brilliance was absolute and inexhaustible, he gradually forgot how to desire the taste of bread.

It is exactly into these gates that our time has decided to march.

This text refuses footnotes, bibliography, and simulated Socratic dialogue. Out of consistency with its own thesis. If the diagnosis is the saturation of the phantasma by an excess of horizontal signs, the solution cannot be the addition of more signs. Only silence. References to Baudrillard, Debord, Byung-Chul Han, Peirce, and others operate in the Dialectical Appendix as structural characters, not as citational authorities. The reader will recognize there, dispersed and formally incarnated, the “footnotes” of this meditation. The chosen genre is that of the classical demonstratio: an exposition that suffices through the strength of its internal articulations. This implies an asymmetry, a deliberate unevenness: the author anticipates objections and dissolves them a priori. This is the realization of an impasse — if the phantasma is corrupted, there is no prior commensurability for genuine debate. The note the reader has just read is, itself, a necessary performative contradiction. A sign that explains the refusal of signs.

Man suffers from a hubris. The Enlightenment illusion — unlimited access to information — is confused today with the actual possession of knowledge. If classical forms of domination imposed themselves through the restriction of access to the real, the tyrant who confiscates books and reduces the horizon of the visible, our time introduces a terrible mutation. The construction of a captivity whose bars are forged in continuous light.

The excess of exposure replaces prohibition. When everything is exposed simultaneously, the Summa Theologica sharing the exact same scrolling space with pornographic triviality and political scandal, the mind loses the structural criterion by which it understands reality. As Thomas Aquinas once noted — I believe in the first part of the Summa, question eighty-four, if memory serves me right —, our comprehension extracts the intelligible from the sensible. And when the vulgar, the obscene, and the essential present themselves under the same regime of perceptual equivalence, the hierarchy of relevance without which intelligence cannot operate dissolves completely.

The individual, blinded by this storm, still believes himself to be the sovereign subject freely choosing what he consumes. He fails to perceive that modern technique is a mold: a structure that pre-configures and stiffens the way the real can appear to consciousness. The medium shapes the inner disposition, habituating the receiver to a pathological state of perpetual excitement and chronic inattention. The supposed "critical sense" of which man so boasts degrades into a purely reactive faculty. He limits himself to responding with conditioned reflexes to pre-fabricated stimuli, rearranging the blocks of a simulacrum that was delivered to him already chewed.

This illusion of immunity is the hermetic lock of the new cave. Plato's prisoner knew he was chained; the contemporary prisoner defends his dungeon because he confuses it with the vastness of the universe itself. He debates within a delimited perimeter, convinced that the simple act of emitting noisy opinions is irrefutable proof of his intellectual freedom. Like fighting cocks spurring the emptiness of a virtual ring, oblivious to their own slaughterhouse.

If the prison is sustained by the disintegration of our capacity to apprehend the very structure of reality, the crisis is not political. It occurs in a much deeper stratum of human architecture. Think with me: before a logical thought can be formulated, the mind needs a fertile soil where concepts gain body and form. If man finds it difficult to reason outside his prison, it is because the very ground where his intelligence takes root has been progressively poisoned.
This ground has a precise name. And it is there that our investigation must, obligatorily, descend.

The belief that contemporary captivity can be broken through the appeal to "critical sense" rests on one of the most destructive superstitions: the fetish of disembodied reason. Heir to a vulgarized Cartesianism, man began to conceive his own intelligence as a floating and autonomous tribunal which, provided it is armed with the rules of logic and "verified" information, would be capable of judging any reality. He forgets that discursive reason is a metabolizing faculty. Its functioning is useless if the raw material supplied to it is rotted at the origin.

To understand the strangulation of intelligence, it is necessary to descend a step in the architecture of human cognition and rescue a fundamental axiom of Aristotelian-Thomistic psychology: anima non intelligit sine phantasmate, the soul does not understand without the aid of images. Before the intellect can formulate a concept, it needs to extract the essence of things from the phantasma, the imagistic and symbolic repository retained in memory and imagination. Imagination, here, is the very pre-categorical matrix of intelligence, the inner mirror where the real is projected and gains density before being reduced to a logical scheme.

It is in this pre-logical stratum that the tragedy is consummated. If reason depends entirely on the integrity of the phantasma to operate, a fragmented imaginary will produce a paralyzed intelligence. The man subjected to continuous digital saturation may debate furiously, present premises, and deduce conclusions with the precision of an automaton, but his logic spins in the void. Because the images that populate his mind are ephemeral, equivalent in value, and devoid of vertical resonance, his reasoning becomes syntactic gymnastics, incapable of apprehending the tragic and real thickness of human existence. He believes he is analyzing reality objectively, ignoring that his "critical sense" operates over a mosaic of pre-digested stimuli. A relentless logic applied to an unreal imaginary produces only methodical madness.
The diagnosis of the crisis cannot stop at the denunciation of factual falsehoods. The lie still presupposes the structure of truth to exist; the environment operates a mutation in the very substance of what the mind is capable of absorbing. To understand how the human phantasma has been dehydrated and leveled, we must analyze the exact mechanism of this fraud: the substitution of the window with the mirror, the death of the symbol.

Having established that human intelligence breathes through its imaginary, the question imposes itself: what, exactly, is the nature of the poison that has corrupted the phantasma of modern man? The answer lies in the degradation of images. The perfect crime of the technical era consisted in the systematic substitution of the symbol with the sign.

The Symbol and the Sign are antagonistic forces that operate on distinct axes of reality. The sign belongs strictly to the horizontal axis: conventional, it always points to something else on the same plane of existence. The traffic sign points to the road, the bank digit points to the money. It exhausts itself in its immediate function. The symbol, on the contrary, operates on the vertical axis: it is a condensed window that carries within itself the real presence of what it represents, and demands of the observer a contemplative ascesis, because it always points to a higher order of reality.

I remember, years ago, taking refuge from a storm inside a small chapel. The rain beat heavy on the roof, and the air smelled of damp dust and burnt wax. I stood for a long time looking at a crucifix carved in dark wood. There was a dense weight there. A tactile resistance of the wood itself that did not ask to be read. That anchoring is what the symbol does.

The media environment has exterminated symbolic capacity, instituting the absolute dictatorship of the sign. When man consumes his daily dose of digital jolts, he does not come into contact with reality, but navigates a closed system of stimuli that demand no higher imaginative effort. A cold, electrical hum that anesthetizes the skin of the face and dries the inner palate, where everything is delivered to him in a state of hyper-reality: visually perfect, existentially shallow.

Without the vertical tension provided by the symbolic imaginary, the human mind flattens under the weight of its own futility.
When the mind loses its symbolic anchor and the world becomes an unbearable succession of empty signs, the very will to live and to know falls ill.

It is necessary to give a precise name to what has so far been described only by its effects. The hypocognitive term designates a determined sequence of atrophies, step by step, in the very architecture of the cognitive faculty. A descending staircase.

The first step is the atrophy of the forming imagination, the faculty that gathers the dispersed and organizes it into a retained image. This is the first casualty, because it is the most exposed. Subjected to a flow that allows no impression to settle before being replaced by the next, the imagination loses the capacity to retain, and begins only to register. The phantasma ceases to be a sedimented repository and is erased with each new signal. Nothing of what is seen ever remains.

The second step, a necessary consequence of the first, is the atrophy of the agent intellect in its abstractive operation: the faculty that extracts the universal essence from the retained image. The agent intellect does not operate on a void nor on the instantaneous; it operates on the sedimented phantasma, precisely the one that the first step has already destroyed. The hypocognitive subject maintains the logical capacity to chain premises, sometimes perfected, as the objection of cognitive plasticity shows. What he has lost is the raw material upon which abstraction is exercised. Therefore, his reason, formally correct, produces empty conclusions: because nothing is delivered to it to work with. Void.

The third step is the atrophy of discretionary judgment, the faculty that hierarchizes the apprehended according to weight and gravity. This is the most serious casualty, and the least perceived by the subject himself, because it manifests as a diseased equanimity towards everything that is presented. Without hierarchy among the apprehended objects, the hypocognitive subject loses the very capacity to formulate the question that distinguishes one from the other. This is the step in which the Symbol/Sign distinction ceases even to be visible as a distinction: everything presents itself at the same level, and the question "what weighs more?" is no longer posed.

The fourth and final step, where our investigation now heads, is the atrophy of the appetitive will towards the apprehended good. Which can no longer desire with intensity proportional to the value of its object, precisely because the third step removed its instrument to discern that value.

And it is here, and only here, that the pathology becomes acedia. And acedia... is the mute collapse. It is the paralysis of one who desperately tries to want something, anything real, and can no longer do so, because the very direction of desire... the will has simply melted under the uninterrupted light. It is the despair of a will that has lost the map upon which any true desire needs to lean in order to move. It is no longer knowing what to love.

Hypocognition, thus understood, is a cascade: each step is a necessary condition of the next, and none is reversible in isolation. Trying to restore discretionary judgment without first restoring imaginative retention is as useless as teaching geometry to one who cannot yet see. This is the structural reason why the therapeutic proposed in this essay begins with silence. Silence attacks exclusively the first step, because it is the only point in the cascade where human intervention still has direct leverage. The subsequent steps — abstraction, judgment, will — are restored only as an indirect consequence of the restoration of the first, never by direct attack on themselves.
I confess that, here, my words no longer advance with the same security. We cross the exact boundary between the cold anatomy of the intellect and the raw flesh of moral experience, and the gulf between the two continues to haunt me. The transition from theory to the pain of the will is abyssal.

We thus enter the pathology of acedia. The monastic tradition of the Desert Fathers understood acedia not as physical laziness, but as a spiritual disgust, a profound aversion to reality itself, removing the meaning of their prayers and injecting a restlessness into the soul. In the contemporary environment, acedia does not manifest as bodily inertia: the individual consumes frantically, using this agitation to hide an existential paralysis. He moves unceasingly precisely because he has lost the capacity to remain before the mystery.

It is at this point of strangulation that we understand the true nature of modern relativism and cynicism. The contemporary intelligentsia, and the common man contaminated by its vulgarization, pride themselves on their moral and epistemological relativism as if it were the summit of analytical sophistication, convinced of having "deconstructed" the grand narratives. Mass relativism is the a posteriori rationalization of an imaginative impotence.

Like the fox in Aesop's fable who, unable to reach the grapes, decrees that they are sour, the man imprisoned in the simulacrum of signs, with his shattered phantasma, finds himself unable to bear the weight and the demand of an absolute truth. The ascesis necessary to apprehend the symbol requires an effort that his mind, poisoned by instant gratification, can no longer bear. In order not to confess his own atrophy, he decrees that truth does not exist. Cynicism becomes a shield designed to camouflage the misery of a soul.

Blindness is defensive. Cave man clings to relativism because that is the only philosophy that justifies his state of acedia. Any intrusion of an objective truth would force upon him an awakening experienced as unbearable pain.
If the disease resides in this existential refusal and in this atrophy of the imagination, there is no logical argument that can rescue this subject. Discursive reason cannot cure the matrix upon which it itself depends. If the problem precedes the discourse, the solution must, obligatorily, precede it as well.

If the crisis is an existential mutilation that corrupts the imaginary and culminates in the acedia of the will, all solutions that operate on the purely discursive level are accomplices of the disease itself. Trying to cure an intelligence that has lost the symbolic apprehension of the real by offering it more debates is the equivalent of prescribing geometry exercises to a blind man in the hope of restoring his vision. The therapeutic must obligatorily precede articulated reason.
If human intelligence does not operate without images, and if the technological environment has converted our repository of images into a continuous hum of horizontal and disconnected stimuli, the first step towards rescuing the subject is strictly subtractive. Silence.

Silence, the voluntary interruption of the flow of signs, is the frontal refusal of the regime of perceptual equivalence. By cutting off the supply of the simulacrum, the individual initially experiences the acute symptom of withdrawal: boredom and anguish in the face of the void. It is in this induced vacuum that the mind recovers its natural breathing. Silence is the decompression chamber where hyper-reality loses its gravitational force and attention returns to being a sovereign faculty.

But subtraction is not enough; the mind demands an object. Once the ingestion of the poison is interrupted, the stage of re-symbolization is required. The masterful work of art, liturgy, profound poetry, and the direct contemplation of the physical world are the vectors of the Symbol, the instruments capable of once again injecting the vertical dimension into human consciousness. Allowing a higher intelligence to reorganize his phantasma, returning proportion, hierarchy, and gravity to his inner world. He is, literally, rebuilding the mold through which reality may once again be thought.
Philosophy is a demand for existential transformation. There is no qualitative leap in the intellect without a prior and agonizing effort of the will to break free from the cynicism of our time.

Mind you, the man who wishes to regain his sovereignty must accept that there is no collective shortcut. The restoration of the subject will be a solitary victory. Whoever refuses this effort of imaginative purification is just one more blinking on the wall of the cave, convinced that his paltry light is the dawn of a new world.

Dialectical Appendix

The present essay, in consistency with its own premises, refuses the defensive posture and rhetorical appeasement. In diagnosing the saturation of the phantasma and the death of the symbol under the weight of hyper-reality, this thesis inevitably attracts the artillery of specialized academia. To honor the classical dialectical tradition, this appendix invites the most sophisticated and lethal critical formulations to the center of the analytical arena, granting them maximum structural intelligence, including, where due, the partial concession of ground. The objective is not the clash, but the relentless application of logical rigor.

The first assault, originating from cognitive sciences and media theory, would postulate that the essay commits an error of biological nostalgia by pathologizing adaptation. The erudite critic will affirm that the transition from the symbol to the ephemeral sign is not a degradation of the phantasma, but an evolutionary reconfiguration of the mind. Under this lens, the brain subjected to the digital storm would be developing a reticular and decentralized intelligence, capable of processing multiple simultaneous nodes of information. A competence that empirically documented neuroplasticity would confirm: the human brain reconfigures its own synaptic pathways in response to the environment, and nothing in its architecture demands that this reconfiguration be read as a loss.

It is necessary to grant the objection what is its due: synaptic plasticity is a fact, not a contestable hypothesis, and it would be dishonest to deny that the brain exposed to the digital flow acquires, in fact, speed in switching between stimuli. The critic's error does not lie in affirming the change, but in confusing two distinct planes of analysis: the metric of reactive efficiency and the metric of existential apprehension. A faculty can become faster at switching between nodes of information and, simultaneously, more incapable of sustaining the contemplative attention necessary to extract the immaterial essence of any of those nodes. Because the very architecture of the horizontal stimulus physically prevents the interval of rest that conceptual abstraction requires. It follows, with rigor, that the "reticular evolution" celebrated by the critic correctly describes a gain in reactive speed, but errs in equating it to a gain in intelligence; it describes the perfection of the reflex, not of the intellect, and confuses the wrong metric with the right question.

The second objection, armed by structural linguistics, will assault the central premise that distinguishes the Sign from the Symbol. The theorist will argue that the claim of a "vertical axis" or a "real presence" in the image is an unsustainable epistemological mysticism. The counter-argument postulates that every symbol is, ultimately, a conventionalized sign that operates within horizontal networks of cultural signification, defined purely by its difference in relation to other signs. And, to anticipate the most obvious escape of the author, the well-informed critic will invoke two non-participatory exits already available in the philosophical tradition. Peirce's triadic semiotics, which would solve the problem of reference through the interpretant without resorting to any metaphysical participation; and the causal theories of reference (Kripke, Putnam), which anchor meaning in a causal chain of baptism and use, not in a shared substance. If these solutions suffice to explain how language touches the world, the "vertical axis" of the essay becomes a superfluous postulate. An unnecessary metaphysical hypothesis where a more parsimonious semiotic explanation already solves the problem.

The ruin of this reinforced formulation does not lie in ignoring these alternatives, but in showing that both solve a different problem than the apprehension of value and hierarchy, and that is where they fail. Kripke's causal theory successfully explains how a name fixes itself to a referent through a historical chain of use; but the causal fixation of a label to an object says nothing about why certain objects, upon being apprehended, carry weight, gravity, and ethical demand, while others, equally referenced with causal precision, remain inert. The causal chain explains the aim of the sign, not its density.

Similarly, the Peircean interpretant, the effect that a sign produces in another mind, correctly describes a triadic and dynamic process, but remains indifferent to value. An interpretant can be generated as much by an advertising billboard as by a liturgical rite, without triadic semiotics, by itself, offering any internal criterion to explain why the second demands of the subject an inner disposition, ascesis, that the first will never demand. I don't know if I can explain the gravity of this well, but it is the epicenter of all disintegration of meaning.
But the most demanding critic will not be satisfied with this reply without demanding a concrete test, and it is fair that he demand it.

Scripture provides an exemplary case against the thesis itself, and it must be faced without detour: the bronze serpent raised by Moses in the desert (Numbers 21) is instituted as a symbol in the full sense that this essay defends. It does not point to itself, it mediates a real healing, it demands of the gaze a contemplative disposition. Centuries later, the same physical object, without any alteration in its matter, is destroyed by Hezekiah (2 Kings 18:4) precisely because the people had begun burning incense to it, treating it as an idol. Nothing changed in the object; the disposition of those contemplating it changed entirely. If the vertical axis depends entirely on the posture of the observer, and not on any stable property of the symbol, then the Symbol/Sign distinction is not a difference in axis, it is a difference in degree. A sign that has not yet been banalized, and which banalization can always reach.

It is necessary to grant this example what it proves, without pretending to dissolve it completely. Vertical participation is not a fixed and guaranteed property of the object, but an unstable relationship, always reversible by the disposition of the one who contemplates. The essay itself already stated this, by demanding of the observer "a contemplative ascesis" as a condition, not as an accessory. What the biblical example does not prove is that the vertical category is, therefore, illusory or reducible to the horizontal. The bronze serpent, when venerated as an idol, does not become just any sign among others; it becomes the object of prophetic accusation, the proof that something vertically owed was unduly denied to it. The possibility of degradation of a symbol into an idol presupposes, to even be named as degradation, that there was something to degrade. A purely horizontal sign cannot be idolatrized, because idolatry is precisely the confusion between the two axes, and that confusion is only intelligible if the axes, in fact, differ. The vertical axis does not compete with Peirce, Kripke, or the example of the Nehushtan for the same territory; it survives all three as the only category capable of explaining why the fall is a fall, and not a change of use.

The third assault will denounce the elitism of the proposed solution. The critical sociologist will point out that prescribing subtractive silence, withdrawal, and the consumption of high culture constitutes an aristocratic escapism. The objection will affirm, with considerable empirical reason, that the material survival and social integration of the individual depend, in fact, on his immersion in the digital flow.

Employment, family communication, the very access to basic services today pass through the network of signs that the essay proposes to abandon. Demanding the amputation of this connection in the name of a vertical "re-symbolization" risks ignoring real economic violence, converting the imaginative cure into a temporal luxury that only those who already possess a surplus of time and material security can afford.

But the sharpest objector will not be satisfied with this first reply, nor will he accept that the essay continues to float in abstraction while accusing the concrete world. He will demand: name the mechanism, or the thesis remains an accusation without a defendant. What good is it to speak of the "dictatorship of the sign" and "horizontal stimulus" if the author refuses to point out, with precision, the device that executes this dictatorship? A diagnosis that refuses the naming of its object is cowardly immunity to empirical testing. If the architecture of the horizontal stimulus is not an accident, but the deliberate product of attention engineering operated by concrete economic interests — the design, for example, of the infinite scroll, which deliberately eliminates any natural stopping point so that attention never finds the rest that abstraction requires —, then why should the appropriate response be entirely a private ascesis, and not also a regulation, an institutional design, a collective action upon the device itself?
To the critic who demands the defendant, the essay grants the name, without thereby betraying the stylistic refusal that governs its body. For it is the adversary, not the author, who introduces the particular sign here, and the author only accepts it as a test of his own thesis. The infinite scroll is, in fact, an exemplary case. Its architecture not only saturates the perceptual field, it saturates it in a way structurally conceived to prevent the pause, the interval, the caesura. Precisely the emptiness from which, according to the essay, intelligence extracts the necessary distance to convert the phantasma into concept. The device is not neutral before the thesis; it is its most literal confirmation: a mechanism designed, with measurable commercial success, to eliminate from the subject exactly the faculty that the essay identifies as the condition of abstraction.

But granting the name is not granting the entirety of the objection. Here the essay must recognize a genuine limit. "Inner subtraction" correctly answers the objection of access, showing that imaginative purification does not demand physical flight from the network, and is therefore not the privilege of those who already possess material surplus. The subject can recognize the infinite scroll for what it is and refuse it contemplative immersion without having to abandon the device that employment or family demands. But this answer does not answer, and does not pretend to answer, the objection of origin. The question about who designs the infinite scroll, with what interests, and through what regulatory mechanisms it could be different, belongs to a distinct order of investigation: political, economic, institutional, which this essay restrictively does not address. I make no claim to resolve the failure of superstructures here. The diagnosis offered describes the pathology of the phantasma and the condition of possibility for its cure in the individual subject. It does not offer, and does not pretend to offer, a theory of the transformation of the device that produces the pathology on a civilizational scale. Naming the infinite scroll proves that the thesis has a defendant; it does not prove, nor does it intend to prove, that the sentence against the defendant falls within the purview of this essay.

The fourth and most uncomfortable assault does not attack any specific premise of the essay; it attacks its defensive architecture. The critic will observe that the introductory note has already pre-classified all possible disagreement: if the interlocutor's phantasma is corrupted, "there is no prior commensurability for genuine debate". Which means, in practice, that whoever disagrees with the thesis has already been described, even before speaking, as a victim of acedia, of defensive relativism, or of the structural blindness that the essay itself diagnoses. A thesis that transforms every possible objection into a symptom of the disease it describes is not doing philosophy. It is building a system closed to any external refutation, and that is rhetorical immunization.

This objection cannot be dissolved without confirming itself: any attempt to refute it entirely would reproduce exactly the gesture it denounces. It is necessary to grant it real ground. In fact, the structure of the introductory note shields the essay against a specific type of disagreement: that which rejects the thesis because it is already immersed in the condition the thesis describes. Without additional argument, the cynic who decrees "truth does not exist" is, exactly as the essay predicts, merely confirming it. Against this form of disagreement, the essay is indeed irrefutable, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.

But there is a disagreement of another order that the essay cannot shield without contradicting itself: that which attacks not the conclusion, but the very architecture of the central premise. For example, someone who would demonstrate that the Symbol/Sign distinction is reducible, without remainder, to a difference in degree within the same horizontal axis (not a difference in axis), completely eliminating the need for the "vertical" as a distinct category. A refutation of this kind would not be a symptom of acedia; it would be an attack on the structure of the thesis, and the essay would have to fall or revise itself before it, unable to invoke the critic's acedia as a shield. For the objection is not born of a refusal to contemplate; it is born of a counter-thesis about the nature of contemplating itself. The dividing line separates the disagreement that reaffirms the diagnosed phenomenon from the disagreement that offers an alternative and commensurable architecture.

Only the first is, in fact, immunized; the second remains exposed, as any thesis that deserves the name of philosophical must be — and this is exactly the test that the example of the Nehushtan, in the second objection, tried in fact to impose. And perhaps it is only in this painfully open territory that the real can touch us again.
