O Analista e o Profeta - Pseudo-Causalidade e Causalidade
The Analyst and the Prophet - Pseudo-Causality and Causality
Ele é o observador do já-dado.
A estatística substituiu o juízo.
A idolatria do dado é a doença.

The Analyst and the Prophet - Pseudo-Causality and Causality
My father keeps an old Tissot watch, bought I don't know how many decades ago. As a boy, I used to handle it with care. It was a heavy object, with the cold steel against the palm of my hand, and if you pressed it to your ear, you could hear the minuscule work of the gears. There was an immense comfort in that mechanics. The next minute was always a mathematical consequence of the previous one. No surprises. The future of that little universe was already entirely written in the arrangement of its parts.
At some point, we decided that human history should work like my father's watch.
We convinced ourselves that tomorrow is merely an extension of the past. We built an empire, projected graphs, and crowned the analyst as the high priest of our time: the fellow who knows how to measure everything that has already happened. I too once believed that statistics was a form of humility before the facts, but it took me years to realize that the humility of the method hid the arrogance of the premise.
For this belief in the dominability of the future to sustain itself, the prevailing mentality required a falsification. And the falsification consisted in confusing two levels of reality that should never be confused: that of description and that of causality.
Where ancient civilizations consulted constellations in search of omens, modernity interrogates statistical models. This instrumental transition reveals a far more arrogant pretension.
Measuring trends is not equivalent to producing them. The analyst merely drags the dead weight of the present, prolonging it in formal, mathematized language. Their entire intellectual activity consists in registering pre-existing regularities and extrapolating them, actively confining the real to what fits their ruler.
The philosophical trap of this method is its fundamental, almost never confessed hypothesis: the assumption that reality is stable enough to be anticipated by simple extension.
Human history is the arena where decisions capable of reconfiguring the very horizon of possibilities emerge. The engine of history is the emergence of normative principles and actions that do not derive from preceding material conditions and which, precisely because of their founding nature, cannot be anticipated by any quantitative extension of the past. Every prediction that claims universality bears a contradiction at its core: by assuming the continuity of what already exists as a rule, it becomes structurally blind to what can, at any moment, inaugurate what does not yet exist. The future, as the space of the new, if deduced from the simple extension of the past, is emptied of its properly historical dimension.
By exclusively prioritizing what can be quantified, the axis of intelligibility was shifted. People began to consider as more "real" precisely that which is most easily measurable. Consequently, everything that escapes mathematical formulation — moral intention, free decision, the establishment of meaning — is summarily relegated to the condition of a subjective residue, treated as irrelevant to the "objective comprehension" of the world. It borders on the comical, were it not tragic, this arrogance of those who think the mystery of the human spirit fits entirely within a spreadsheet cell.
Thus emerges the figure of the analyst as the characteristic human type of our era. They are the observer of the already-given. Their technical competence in detecting patterns and correlations is not, in itself, illegitimate in the strict domain of matter. The problem begins when this restricted competence is elevated to the category of the ultimate criterion of intelligibility, as if entire reality exhausted itself in what can be registered.
The analyst thus becomes someone who describes with microscopic precision a process whose origin and direction they merely register, being radically impotent to modify them. What they lack, and what technique can never supply, is the causal efficacy that would transform their mere descriptive comprehension into a principle of novelty. They know a great deal, but what they know is always the already-constituted. Their intelligence shines in exact proportion to the stability of their object; when this inertia breaks, when an unprecedented end emerges to reorder the field of forces, their analysis suddenly becomes retrospective. They will describe with mathematical exactitude the rules of a game that is no longer being played.
Man ended up confusing the indefinite expansion of management tools with the possession of a real power over the future. The future ceases to be conceived as the fissure through which the unprecedented erupts and comes to be viewed as the simple projection of our own expanded boredom.
If there are historical events that cannot be deduced from prior conditions, if there are ruptures that reconfigure the entire field of the possible, the comprehension of the future demands the search for a category of action that surpasses the analysis of regularities. It demands the recognition of a subject who inaugurates the movement of the real.
If the analyst's predictive pretension fails not due to a deficit of technical instruments, but due to inadequacy, then philosophical investigation demands a redirection. Interrogation turns to the causal foundation: "what, in fact, produces it?". This simple shift in questioning dislodges the entire field of debate, removing it from the sphere of quantitative methodologies and returning it to the territory of founding causality.
It is in this terrain, free from statistical superstition, that the recognition of a type of action that inaugurates the movement of the real is demanded. To this action, which language no longer knows how to name, tradition has called prophetism. For this category to recover its operative dignity, it is necessary to reinscribe it within the rigorous domain of final causality.
The error of the materialist mentality is to interpret prophecy as a primitive and imperfect form of prediction. Under this distorted optics, the prophet would be nothing more than an archaic analyst who, deprived of computers, tries to compensate for their ignorance with symbolic images. The specific function of the prophet is to introduce into reality what, without their direct intervention, would never even exist as a horizon of possibility. Prophetic prediction does not describe a latent tendency; it is the articulation of an end which, once enunciated, immediately reorganizes the field of human action. The prophet sees, undoubtedly, but sees what their own word makes visible; their vision is performative and founding.
I admit that words fail me as I enter this terrain. Crossing the line from brute mechanics to the unfathomable realm of intentionality demands abandoning certainties, and the text feels the weight of this transition. But it is a fact that in the specific domain of human action, a causality operates through final configuration: the intended end reorganizes means, guides decisions, and selects possibilities from the future. This structure, which classical metaphysics identified as teleology, operates here in a transcendent regime. The prophet is, precisely, the place where this final causality institutes an absolutely unprecedented end that was not contained in the initial conditions of the system. It is a dynamic that theology, with greater precision, called vocation: a finality that is realized by calling the subject and demanding their response.
By articulating a word charged with demand and meaning, the prophet creates a pole of orientation that did not previously exist as such. This creation is radical. From the moment a new end is recognized by men as binding, the gravity of the world alters: what was merely one among many options becomes morally necessary, and what seemed historically inevitable reveals itself, suddenly, as contingent and avoidable.
The prophetic word operates in the register of pure symbolic efficacy, a force far superior to persuasive rhetoric. It reconfigures the very horizon of possibilities within which contents acquire meaning. The prophet institutes criteria. Their word forges the condition of possibility for certain realities to be recognized. The moment this word, irreducible to the material context preceding it, inaugurates a new field of intelligibility, it is by definition invisible to any method of analysis based on the extrapolation of the past.
It is at this point of rupture that opposition reaches its maximum clarity. The analyst depends on the inertia of the world as it is; their intelligence is strictly proportional to the stability of the object they observe. In contrast, the prophet acts when the world, by itself, offers no direction. The analyst operates within a system of meanings; the prophet intervenes in the very constitution of that system.
The capacity to endure not only the concept, but the hot lead of a word that reconfigures the real — to feel its physical weight tearing through the inertia of habit —, implies that there is, within the agent, a structure capable of receiving, sustaining, and transmitting this transcendent exigency against the colossal pressures of the environment.
This pushes us toward the anthropological question: what type of subject possesses the internal constitution necessary to exercise this original action? I make no claim to resolve this human labyrinth in these few pages, but the admission of a spiritual and founding causality, the efficacy of the word that reconfigures the horizon of the possible, collides frontally with the minimalist anthropology of our time. If prophetic action demands a rupture with the inertia of the already-given, it requires a human support with an internal constitution capable of bearing its weight.
We are faced here with the necessity of rescuing the concept of interiority, liberating it from its capture by reductionist sciences.
Through mass psychology and neurobiological reduction, "interiority" was degraded to the condition of a repository of emotions and traumas. The "inner self," in this view, is nothing more than a search for therapeutic relief. If interiority were merely this fluid, reactive psychic flux, the subject would remain a slave to immanence, incapable of any real distancing from environmental stimuli.
In opposition to this psychologism, interiority must be understood as a structure. It is the institution of a "logical interval" between external stimulus (or internal impulse) and the consummation of the act. It is the decompression chamber where the mechanical necessity of the world is suspended. Without this space, the continuous inertial movement that the analyst so expertly quantifies reigns supreme. Interiority is the condition of possibility preventing man from immediately coinciding with the circumstances surrounding him.
This interval operates as a tribunal. When the subject withdraws into their true interiority, what they encounter is the exigency of truth. It is in this space of detachment that the performative word, the vocation, the transcendent end, emerge summoning man to personal responsibility. Interiority is the structural capacity to stand alone before a measure that transcends and judges the subject themselves. It is the place where the illusion of the crowd loses its coercive force and consciousness is compelled to render accounts to the very structure of reality.
The techno-statistical system, out of an instinct for survival, harbors a horror of this tribunal. For the analyst's predictive illusion to function with perfection, it is necessary that individuals react in a standardized way; the statistical machine demands the collapse of the logical interval. Total predictability is only achieved when man is stripped of his interiority and perfectly integrated into the reward system. A subject without interiority is the golden dream of technical governance: they merely react, becoming a tame and perfectly calculable variable on the efficiency spreadsheet.
Here lies the central anthropological drama. If interiority is the indispensable prerequisite for any historical action that breaks the system's entropy, and if environmental pressures work uninterruptedly to suppress it, it becomes evident that it must be forged.
The subject capable of hearing the transcendent exigency and acting upon history is the result of an operation against the forces of dissolution. This leads us to the technical necessity of a formation device known to tradition under a metaphor whose function is instrumental: the figure of the "desert."
The desert must be understood in its operative purity: it is the laboratory where independence is forged. An individual's founding strength is directly proportional to their capacity to endure the absence of the world without dissolving.
The mechanism of this technology, which manifests historically in millennial practices like silence, fasting, and vigil, was misunderstood by modern materialism, which reduced it to a religious masochism. In reality, it is the athletic training of the will against reactive automatism. By voluntarily subtracting physical and social stimuli, the subject forces their internal structure to sustain itself, stripped of the support of immediate rewards. Silence is the methodical refusal to answer the environment's interpolations. It is an act of violence against psychological inertia, creating that logical interval which constitutes the tribunal of truth.
This process of emptying obeys a pragmatic objective: the conquest of an Archimedean point. To move the mass of human history without being absorbed by it, the individual needs a fulcrum situated outside the mass itself. The desert is this methodological externality. The man who has stopped begging for the crowd's approval, who has amputated his dependence on gregarious comfort, and who has learned to remain motionless in the terrifying void of his own expectations, suddenly becomes invulnerable to the behavioral management techniques in which the analyst places all trust. He has escaped the jurisdiction of prediction.
The subject who returns from this laboratory of subtraction is no longer a product of their time. They have acquired the density of a foreign body within the sociological system. It is this strangeness, this acquired immunity to the contagion of collective hysterias, that allows them to enunciate the transcendent end with an authority that analytical erudition could never simulate. Their word acquires historical gravity because it is uttered from a place the world does not control and metrics cannot measure.
When an entire civilization decides to methodically dismantle all technologies of subtraction, criminalizing silence, pathologizing solitude, and converting interiority into a public square of uninterrupted digital exhibitionism, it condemns itself to eradicating the very raw material of historical decision.
The collapse of subtraction technologies does not result, as the progressivist utopia promised, in the emancipation of the subject, but in their definitive absorption by the machinery of means. When interiority is shattered and the logical interval collapses under the continuous pressure of stimuli, man is reduced to a bundle of reactions perfectly mappable by the analytical apparatus.
This is the tragedy of a civilization that has achieved the paroxysm of technical efficiency, but has lost, absolutely, the capacity to formulate an end transcending the mere mechanical maintenance of the system.
The technical, scientific, and bureaucratic apparatus, managed with millimetric precision, offers unprecedented power over matter. But a law exists that materialism ignores: technique is structurally blind regarding purposes. A medium, no matter how sophisticated and complex, never engenders its own end. By abolishing the transcendent axis, the performative word that institutes vocation and subordinates action, society has closed itself within pure immanence. The practical result of this closure is a dizzying entropy: means transform into ends in themselves, and immediate utility converts into the sole surviving criterion of validity.
Historical action degrades. They spin, we spin, the gear turns in a deafening buzz, turning and turning and consuming everything, consuming strength, consuming speech, consuming ourselves to exhaustion, because no one knows how to say "stop" and no one has the courage to point where to go. We witness the "total mobilization" of individuals, a brutal demand merely to keep the wheel of economy, communication, and technological innovation spinning. A vacuum of direction. The analyst, now elevated to supreme manager of this blind gear, optimizes movement, perfects metrics, and minimizes friction, but is impotent to justify the meaning of the march. They know exactly how to do everything faster, but utterly ignore the why of doing it. Statistics has replaced judgment.
Without the founding gesture, without the prophetic figure who breaks the inertia of the already-given, the social system begins to spin in a vacuum, consuming the spiritual and moral reserves inherited from previous epochs to the point of exhaustion.
The urgency of historical decision imposes itself. It is essential to understand that this decision is the original and dramatic act of a subject who, having recovered their form in the desert of interiority, reassumes the burden of transcendence. Historical decision is the sword stroke cutting the Gordian knot of immanence and subjecting technical chaos to a superior, binding finality.
The alternative presented is simple: either one recovers the capacity to subordinate oneself to an end that does not derive from matter, restoring the dignity of human action as a founding force, or one conforms to being merely the variable of a statistic.
DIALECTIC APPENDIX:
The publication of an essay that strikes at the causal foundations of an era is incomplete without the rigor of dialectical clash. This essay, by demarking the structural boundary between the analyst and the prophet, naturally invites scrutiny. Consequently, this appendix invites objections to the center of the arena.
The reader of a sociological inclination will argue that prophetic action cannot operate in a vacuum. If prophetic prediction institutes an absolutely unprecedented end and does not derive from preceding material conditions, the critic will postulate that such a message would necessarily have to utilize the pre-existing system of meanings to be intelligible. The objection asserts that the necessity of this material anchorage would make the prophet not an agent of transcendent causality, but merely a highly astute analyst in reading material trends that were still latent.
This objection, though majestic in its architecture, collapses by committing an inversion between the condition of expression and the principle of causality. The adversary premise presupposes that the matter receiving the form is, itself, the author of the form — if memory serves, it was Aristotle, or perhaps Thomas Aquinas following in his steps — forgive me if the citation falters in details —, who first warned against the absurdity of this inversion, reminding us that the receptacle does not conceive itself. It is undeniable that the prophetic word utilizes constituted language to forge its own field of intelligibility. However, the lexical support utilized does not engender the targeted finality, just as cold marble does not conceive the architect. Teleology operates here in a transcendent regime, employing the world's inertia merely as a receptive support. The fact that radical innovation requires material contingency to manifest attests solely to its adequacy to human form; yet, because the instituted end immediately reorganizes the field of human action, the novelty of its moving cause remains irreducible to the past.
Next, the erudite critic will turn his scalpel to the concept of the technology of subtraction. He will propose, with lucid coherence, that the methodical emptying and the absence of the world experienced in the desert do not institute a true logical interval or a superior tribunal. The opposing thesis will argue that the individual who amputates their dependence on gregarious comfort does not attain an Archimedean point, but loses the very dialogical compass binding them to shared reality, slipping into a solipsism where simple psychological self-sufficiency is mistakenly elevated to the status of transcendence.
The adversary premise confuses social validation with the very structure of truth, assuming that human sanity demands constant submission to the colossal pressures of the environment. It happens that submission to the mechanical necessity of the world is, precisely, the antithesis of historical decision. The space of detachment forged in interiority is not a black hole where the subject idolizes their own ego, but the decompression chamber where the subject withdraws to encounter the exigency of truth. Interiority sculpted by silence is not man's enclosure, but the sole structural fissure capable of supporting the reception of a measure that transcends and judges the subject themselves.
The empirical mentality will launch its most lethal dart, accusing the essay of caricaturing scientific method itself. The academic investigator will assert that the analyst does not possess the arrogance of denying free will; they merely apply a circumscribed methodological cutout. The argument is that detecting patterns and correlations does not mean dictating the end, but mapping the boundaries of contingency so human action operates based on facts rather than delusions. To accuse the analyst of methodological blindness, the critic will say, is to confuse epistemic prudence with a materialist assertion.
The objection ignores the limits established by the author. The central thesis never invalidates technical competence in detecting patterns, recognizing it as legitimate in the strict domain of matter. The logical collapse pointed out in the essay does not lie in the practice of measurement, but in the exact instant when this restricted competence is elevated to the category of ultimate criterion of intelligibility. What the researcher thinks in their laboratory when taking off their lab coat is philosophically and historically irrelevant if human society utilizes the data they generated as the sole acceptable criterion for the exercise of power and decision-making. The "analyst" of the text is not a physical person; it is a civilizational archetype, a gear of the technical system that assumed the monopoly of public truth. When the social apparatus comes to consider more "real" precisely what is quantifiable, mathematical formalism usurps the place of moral judgment. The measurement of regularities ceases to be a descriptive tool and converts into entropy when blind, optimized means suppress the sole founding gesture capable of justifying the civilizational march. Data idolatry is the disease.
The objection that none of the previous three dared touch: if the prophetic nature of a word only becomes recognizable after it reconfigures the field of the possible, if, as the essay itself admits, the ascertainment of rupture "suddenly becomes retrospective" and the prophet is only identifiable after having already reconfigured the field that the analyst merely registered too late, then there exists no criterion prior to the event distinguishing the authentic prophet from the apocryphal one whose word, by historical accident, coincided with a rupture they did not institute, but merely described.
It is true that no word reveals itself as prophetic at the instant it is uttered, and it is true that history is replete with voices that announced themselves as founding and which time silenced. But a phenomenon recognizable only in retrospect does not imply it lacks an internal structure distinguishing it beforehand; it merely implies that the human observer, limited by position in time, lacks an instrument of prior measurement — which is a limitation of the judging subject, not an indeterminacy of the judged object. The same difficulty accompanies any genuine final cause: the seed does not reveal itself as an oak before growing, and yet no one concludes from this delay in recognition that the difference between a fertile and a sterile seed is arbitrary or non-existent until the tree rises.
Where the objection stumbles is in supposing that the tradition it invokes — that of discernment — never developed criteria prior to historical outcome, when precisely the opposite is true. The critic's error does not lie in demanding a prior criterion; it lies in supposing that the absence of statistical certainty equates to the absence of any criterion, when in truth an entire regime of discernment precedes retrospective judgment: the coherence of the word with the moral order it professes, the absence of personal gain in the gesture of the proclaimer, the agent's disposition before power that could accommodate them and suffering that could dissuade them. And this simply does not belong to the same logical family as the extrapolative prediction the analyst practices; to demand that it does is to measure cause by the instruments of effect. The objection displaces it to the interior of prophetism itself, demanding that it distinguish, prior to the outcome, between vocation and its counterfeit. And it is this internal distinction that the present essay still owes to its own conclusion.
The objection that no conceptual architecture, no matter how elegant, can dispense with: if the distinction between the analyst and the prophet aims to be more than an exercise in philosophical geometry, it must be able to discriminate, in a concrete, documented case, which of the two was speaking. The tradition this essay invokes offers, in itself, an episode lending itself exactly to this test. In the year Jerusalem was besieged by the Babylonian threat, two men spoke in the name of the same God before the same assembly. Hananiah announced that the invader's yoke would be broken in two years, that the temple vessels and exiles would return, that normality and peace were near — an optimistic reading, but entirely anchored in political trends then underway, in shared hope among court and people, in what everyone already desired to hear. Jeremiah, in contrast, announced the opposite: that the yoke would worsen, that the city would fall, that seventy years of exile still lay ahead — a word frontally contradicting consensus, the court's interest, and the very desire of the prophet uttering it.
If the criterion defended here had to operate solely retrospectively, observing who got it right would suffice: history confirmed Jeremiah and silenced Hananiah, resolving the case by simple accounting of outcome — precisely the statistical mode this essay rejects as insufficient. But the sacred text preserving the episode leaves no room for delayed discernment; it records the criterion being applied at the exact instant of prophecy, prior to any historical confirmation. Hananiah spoke from the inertia of the desirable: his message coincided point-for-point with what the court, people, and he himself already expected, demanding no price, no rupture with personal interest, no disposition toward suffering that his word might entail. He is, with exactitude, the analyst described in this essay, prolonging religious language with the present's inertia and extrapolating into the future what the present already contained as hope. Jeremiah, conversely, spoke against his immediate interest, personal safety, and the consensus of his priestly class; and it is this disposition to pay the price of one's word — prior and independent of future confirmation — that tradition offered as a public sign.
The criterion not only withstands the concrete case; it finds therein its sharpest form of prior application. The objection, by demanding historical landing, does not dismantle the thesis; it provides the sole type of proof a thesis on founding causality can offer: the record of a moral criterion operating before the outcome confirmed it.
I confess that, upon finishing these lines, I feel the weight of my own hesitation. I, who began this essay admitting my former fascination with the safety of statistics, wonder now whether I myself would have Jeremiah's courage before the court. It is easy to write about the desert; the difficult part is enduring its aridity. I deliver this anguish to you as a shared fear: which of us would truly be prepared today to bear the cost of uttering that first word, even if it costs us our very lives?
